Unlocker - another tool in your arsenal

Posted by sujay on October 24th, 2006 — Posted in security, freeware

If you are like me and had had any experience to manually remove a trojan file you must be familiar with this windows dialog message.

or any of the following messages

  • Cannot delete file: Access is denied
  • There has been a sharing violation.
  • The source or destination file may be in use.
  • The file is in use by another program or user.
  • Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Unlocker to the rescue. Unlocker removes the lock placed by the application/user and lets you move/delete the file.

Unlocker can be downloaded from http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Classic Borat moment

Posted by sujay on October 22nd, 2006 — Posted in videos

BoratHere’s an edited version of (link not safe for work alert) Borat’s first appearance on Conan O’Brien. You’ll notice that back then Borat’s hair was neatly gelled, much before he got his dry electric hair look.

Borat is a growing PR headache for Kazakhstan. British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen created Borat as a bumbling journalist. His sketches present Kazakhstan as sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and completely at odds with most Western values. Kazakh officials earlier shut down an official Borat website with the Kazakhstan designation “.kz,” and on Wednesday, the government took out a four-page public relations advertisement in The New York Times featuring several articles on the country’s growing economy and one story features the headline: “Conclave calls for religious tolerance among all faiths throughout the world.” Kazakh officials have also invited Boratto visit their country and discover more about Kazakhstan - the ninth largest country in the world.

Borat’s website has now moved to a .tv domain
Borat’s movie - ‘Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan’ releases on the first week of November.

Check if your PC is Vista compatible

Posted by sujay on October 22nd, 2006 — Posted in operating system

Microsoft has release an utility application which lets you check if your PC is capable of supporting Vista. The app will not work with Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

Related Vista blog: In this week’s tWit Windows Weekly, Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte discuss Vista’s end user license agreements and how Microsoft is really making life harder for the end user. Hey Microsoft, how about releasing a Volume license pack for the household? Not everyone will be able to pay for an extra non-OEM-ed copy of Vista for their second or third computer at home.

Remove logos from your pda/cell phone

This is sweet! It looks like sugar is the answer for removing logos from cellphones without damaging or leaving marks on the surface.

Here’s one trick that I’m definitely going to try.

IE Tab plugin

Posted by sujay on August 30th, 2006 — Posted in time-savers, browser, freeware

I use Firefox for almost all of my browsing except while checking my outlook webmail and participating in ClickToMeet conferencing. The webmail outlook version has more added functionality in Internet Explorer while it renders poorly in Firefox. For example, I cannot do a search on my emails using the Firefox version of webmail. It is rather annoying to open up IE just to check email instead of pressing control-T to open a new browser tab. A quick search on Google (I did not ‘google’) led me to the IE Tab plugin. Using IE Tab you can specify what sites you want to be rendered in IE and on opening the site in Firefox will open a tab rendering the page in Internet Explorer. The whole process is transparent. Yes, you can even run Windows updates! within the Firefox screen now.

If you are one of those folks trying to get your grandparents and parents to switch to Firefox just to avoid their machines from getting infected and avoid those nasty-pop-up-causing-trojans, then this is a must-use plugin
